Marathon Man

In John Schlesinger's tense and well-written thriller, "Marathon Man," the dental torture scene between Laurence Olivier's former Nazi character and Dustin Hoffman's innocent protagonist is a standout moment that will make your teeth ache in a good way. Olivier's infamous question "Is it safe?" echoes through the film, signalling his pursuit of information and a chance to sell stolen diamonds taken from Jews during the war.

William Goldman's complex script weaves together the CIA's secret black ops organization, The Division, with a web of double-crossing and betrayal that spans multiple factions, including former Nazis. The title, "Marathon Man," refers to Hoffman's character's tendency to run, a trait that ultimately saves his life. Hoffman delivers a dynamic performance as the hapless Babe, immersing himself in the role with his signature intensity.

Olivier's portrayal of Szell is nothing short of chilling, as he transforms into a terrifying figure from a past that many wish to forget. His disdain for method acting is reflected in his infamous line "Why not try acting? It's much easier." Despite the film's far-fetched and convoluted plot, Schlesinger's direction and the actors' performances lend it a seriousness and shock value that keeps you on edge throughout. "Marathon Man" is a visceral and unforgettable thriller that will leave a lasting impression on any viewer.
